Tips to Prepare for Dental Implant Surgery

You’ve decided to make the investment in dental implants and have your surgery date scheduled. Though this is an exciting time, just like any surgery, you may be feeling a little nervous. Our periodontist, Dr. Gayle Bradshaw, offers some advice on how to prepare for your dental implant surgery in The Woodlands, TX.

1. Plan to Rest
It’s important for any surgical procedure for you to take a few days off work or responsibilities to rest. You should plan no differently for dental implant surgery! While most patients report an easy and comfortable recovery, you still need to give your body time to rest and recover from the procedure.

2. Eat Healthily
Maintaining good physical health for the weeks leading up to your dental implant surgery can help make the process go smoothly and accelerate your recovery. Your body will be under some distress after surgery and will need to be in good shape to ensure your safety during surgery and after. Be sure to eat a diet rich in vitamins and minerals, calcium, fiber, and protein.

3. Quit Smoking
Smoking limits blood flow and oxygen in your body and negatively affects the immune system. It also slows the healing process after your dental implant surgery and can impact the success of your treatment. Try to avoid smoking for as long as possible before and after your surgery to ensure your investment does not fail.

4. Bring a Driver
Sometimes easily overlooked, another part of planning for dental implant surgery is having a family member or friend to drive you home from your appointment. It’s also a good idea to have this person available for a few hours after you come home to ensure you’re comfortable.

5. Finalize Financing
Before your appointment, be sure to contact our periodontist to finalize any dental financing you may have. You don’t want to realize later that something was missed! Our team will be here at every part of your treatment to answer any questions you may have about your financing.
